A strong arts and culture presence improves a community’s identity by connecting residents and visitors with what is unique about their community.

Enriching Fort Wayne with
Sculptural Bike Racks

Mastodons are on the move. To commemorate our 50th Celebration, it’s a great time for Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne to look at the ways we’ve enhanced the quality of life in our region. We continue to move forward together as an even more vibrant, creative campus and community.

The Legacy Fort Wayne Task Force, created by Mayor Tom Henry in 2011, stated, “A strong arts and culture presence improves a community’s identity by connecting residents and visitors with what is unique about their community” and it specifies the need for an initiative to incorporate public art downtown to promote tourism and place making. Additionally, a recent Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department survey indicated that 64 percent of respondents use our 68 miles of connecting Fort Wayne Trails. Why not merge the need for public art with the popularity of cycling?

IPFW Sculpture with Purpose™—IPFW’s flagship 50th project—enriched Fort Wayne with sculptural bike racks. These 50 sculptures engaged the entire community and were installed widely throughout our area, based on sponsorship and visibility. Through innovative designs specifically crafted to accommodate bicycle parking, IPFW Sculpture with Purpose encourages the benefits of cycling while enriching the streets with art for everyone to enjoy. It is a tribute to Fort Wayne’s passion, momentum, and innovative spirit. IPFW Sculpture with Purpose is a new legacy to be enjoyed for generations to come.

Thank you to the community-minded leaders who committed to an IPFW sponsor and transformed Fort Wayne and IPFW’s campus.
